Toyota Adds Apple Wallet Car Key Support For Select 2026 Models...
Toyota has officially rolled out Apple Wallet digital car key compatibility for its 2026 Camry, RAV4, and Crown models, marking the automaker's first major adoption of the smartphone-based access system. The feature, announced Wednesday, allows drivers to unlock, start, and share vehicle access using an iPhone or Apple Watch without physical keys.
The move comes as digital car keys gain traction in the US auto market, with BMW, Hyundai, and Kia already supporting the Apple Wallet integration. Toyota's delayed but strategic adoption is now trending as the Japanese automaker commands nearly 10% of US vehicle sales, making this a significant expansion of the technology's reach.
Owners of compatible 2026 Toyotas can set up the feature through the Toyota app before transferring it to Apple Wallet. The system uses ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for precise location detection, allowing passive entry when approaching the vehicle. A backup NFC tap-to-unlock function works if the phone battery dies.
Industry analysts note this addresses growing consumer demand for seamless tech integration. "Toyota buyers skew slightly older than tech-first brands," said AutoPacific's Robby DeGraff. "This bridges the gap for loyal customers who want modern convenience without switching manufacturers."
The rollout follows Apple's iOS 17.4 update in March that expanded digital key framework support. Toyota says additional models may gain the feature through over-the-air updates later this year. The automaker has not yet announced Android-compatible digital key plans.
Early adopters on social media report smooth setup processes but note occasional connectivity delays in extreme weather. Toyota dealerships are training staff this week to assist customers with activation as vehicles arrive at US showrooms throughout April.
