The Handmaids Tale Trends Amid New State Abortion Restrictions...

The dystopian series The Handmaid's Tale surged in online searches Wednesday as multiple U.S. states introduced restrictive abortion laws mirroring themes from the show. The spike follows Texas enacting a near-total abortion ban this week and similar bills advancing in Tennessee and Idaho.

Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel and its Hulu adaptation depict a theocratic regime where women are forced into reproductive servitude. Social media users drew parallels between recent legislation and the show's fictional Gilead, with #HandmaidsTale trending on Twitter for over 12 hours.

Activists have used the show's iconic red cloaks and white bonnets in reproductive rights protests since 2017. This week, Planned Parenthood organizers announced new demonstrations featuring the costumes outside Texas courthouses starting Friday.

Hulu reported a 40% increase in The Handmaid's Tale streams this month compared to March. The platform confirmed season 6 production remains on schedule for a 2027 release, though no official date has been announced.

Legal analysts note key differences between state laws and the show's extreme scenarios. However, University of Texas law professor Elizabeth Sepper told NPR Wednesday that “the rhetorical connection resonates because both scenarios treat women’s bodies as state-controlled vessels.”

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre referenced the trend during Tuesday’s briefing, stating the administration “will continue fighting these dangerous policies.” Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott defended his state’s law as “a victory for the unborn.”

Google search data shows “Handmaid’s Tale costumes” and “how to protest abortion laws” as related breakout queries. The American Civil Liberties Union reported a 300% increase in donations since Monday compared to weekly averages.
