Rory McIlroy Withdraws From RBC Heritage, Citing Personal Reasons...
Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from this week's RBC Heritage tournament, just days after his disappointing performance at the Masters. The four-time major champion cited "personal reasons" for his decision, which was announced by the PGA Tour on Monday. The unexpected move has sparked speculation among golf fans and analysts.
The RBC Heritage, held at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina, is one of the PGA Tour's signature events. McIlroy was among the marquee names expected to compete, with the tournament set to begin Thursday. His withdrawal follows a missed cut at Augusta National, where he struggled with his game and finished 10-over par.
McIlroy's team has not provided further details about his reasons for pulling out. The 36-year-old Northern Irishman has been open in recent years about balancing family life with his career. He and his wife, Erica, welcomed their second child in 2025.
The timing raises questions about McIlroy's preparation for next month's PGA Championship. He remains one shot away from completing the career Grand Slam, having won every major except the Masters. Golf analysts suggest the pressure of that pursuit may be weighing on him.
Tournament organizers expressed disappointment but understanding. "We respect Rory's decision and wish him the best," said RBC Heritage tournament director Steve Wilmot. McIlroy had committed to playing in the event as part of the PGA Tour's revised schedule for top players.
Social media reactions have been mixed, with some fans criticizing the withdrawal while others express support. McIlroy has 25 PGA Tour wins but hasn't claimed a major championship since 2014. His last victory came at the 2025 Players Championship.
The RBC Heritage field will now proceed without one of golf's biggest stars. Tournament officials confirmed no replacement will be added this late in the process. First-round tee times will be adjusted accordingly.
McIlroy's next scheduled appearance is the Wells Fargo Championship in early May. His representatives say he remains committed to that event as he prepares for Valhalla and another shot at the PGA Championship title he last won in 2014.
