Patriots Make Surprise Draft Move, Sparking Fan Reactions...

The New England Patriots stunned fans and analysts Thursday night by trading up in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The team acquired the No. 8 overall pick from the Atlanta Falcons, selecting Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis despite having signed veteran Jacoby Brissett earlier this offseason.

Head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed the move signals a long-term plan at quarterback. "Jordan has the leadership and playmaking ability we want building this new era," Mayo told reporters after the selection. The pick marks the Patriots' highest draft selection since taking Mac Jones fifth overall in 2021.

Fan reactions have been mixed across social media. Some praised the aggressive move to secure a potential franchise quarterback, while others questioned passing on elite defensive talent. The Patriots entered the draft with glaring needs at offensive tackle and wide receiver after finishing last in AFC East scoring in 2025.

ESPN's Mel Kiper called the selection "a calculated gamble" given Travis's injury history. The 24-year-old suffered a season-ending leg fracture in November but impressed scouts at his pro day last month. New England surrendered their 2027 second-round pick to complete the trade with Atlanta.

The Patriots hold five more selections in this year's draft, including the 34th overall pick in Friday's second round. Team owner Robert Kraft emphasized rebuilding through youth after the franchise's first back-to-back losing seasons since 1999-2000.

Draft analysts note the move continues New England's offensive overhaul under Mayo and new offensive coordinator Nick Caley. The Patriots have now used first-round picks on offensive players in three consecutive drafts for the first time since 1973-75.

Travis is expected to compete with Brissett during training camp this summer. The Patriots open their 2026 season September 13 against the Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium.
