Masters Purse Hits Record $20 Million As Golfs Payouts Soar...

The Masters Tournament announced a record $20 million purse for 2026, up from $18 million last year, as golf's major championships continue escalating prize money. The winner at Augusta National will take home $3.6 million, while even the 50th-place finisher earns $37,800. The payout jump reflects both golf's booming revenue and pressure to compete with LIV Golf's deep pockets.

Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley confirmed the figures Sunday ahead of Thursday's opening round. The 15% purse increase follows similar bumps at the PGA Championship ($17.5 million) and U.S. Open ($20 million). Only The Open Championship hasn't announced its 2026 purse yet among the four majors.

Fans and players reacted strongly online, with many praising the growth but some questioning whether golf's wealth is distributed fairly. "Happy to see purses rising, but caddies and lower-tier pros need more support too," tweeted PGA Tour veteran Kevin Kisner. The Masters' total purse has nearly doubled since 2016 ($10 million).

The timing fuels interest as Tiger Woods makes his surprise return to competition at Augusta. Woods could earn his sixth green jacket and largest career paycheck at age 50. ESPN's early coverage drew record streaming numbers Sunday, suggesting heightened attention on golf's financial stakes.

Economic analysts note the increases partly respond to LIV Golf offering $20-25 million purses for regular events. While the PGA Tour and majors still offer greater prestige, the money race has clearly accelerated. Next week's RBC Heritage will test whether non-majors can keep pace with a $20 million purse of its own.

Augusta National also revealed it donated $5 million to local charities from 2025 tournament proceeds, maintaining its tradition of community support. The club's limited commercial sponsorships (just IBM, AT&T and Mercedes-Benz) make its revenue growth particularly noteworthy.
