Mary Washington Basketball Makes History With First Final Four Berth...

The University of Mary Washington Eagles men's basketball team has secured its first-ever NCAA Division III Final Four appearance after a dramatic 72-68 overtime victory against Randolph-Macon on Saturday night. The historic win sends the Eagles to Fort Wayne, Indiana, for the national semifinals on April 8, capping a Cinderella season for the Virginia-based program.

Head coach Marcus Kahn's team rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to force overtime before sealing the victory in front of a raucous home crowd at Ron Rosner Arena. Senior guard Trey Pittman led the Eagles with 24 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:12 remaining in overtime.

The victory marks a watershed moment for Mary Washington athletics. The Eagles (28-3) had never advanced beyond the Sweet 16 in their program's history before this tournament run. Their success has sparked celebrations across the Fredericksburg campus and drawn national attention to the small liberal arts university.

Mary Washington's semifinal opponent will be defending national champion Christopher Newport University, setting up an all-Virginia showdown with high stakes. The two schools, separated by just 90 miles, have developed a fierce rivalry in recent years. Their last meeting in January ended with a controversial buzzer-beater win for Christopher Newport.

The Eagles' unexpected tournament run comes after they entered the postseason unranked nationally. Their defensive intensity and balanced scoring have become trademarks, with four players averaging double figures during the tournament. The team's success has also highlighted the growing competitiveness of Division III basketball in Virginia.

University officials announced Sunday that they will charter fan buses to Indiana for students and alumni. Local businesses in Fredericksburg have begun displaying blue-and-white decorations in support of the team. The semifinal game will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network at 5 p.m. ET on Friday.

Mary Washington becomes just the third Capital Athletic Conference team to reach the Division III Final Four since 2000. A win would make them the first Virginia school to play for the national championship since Virginia Wesleyan in 2007.

The team's historic achievement comes during a period of growth for Mary Washington athletics. The university recently completed a $6 million renovation of its basketball facility and added several academic support programs for student-athletes. Athletic director Ken Tyler called the Final Four berth "a transformative moment for our entire university community."
