Darden Restaurants Closes Bahama Breeze Locations Nationwide...

Darden Restaurants, the parent company of popular chains like Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, has abruptly shut down multiple Bahama Breeze locations across the U.S. The closures, confirmed Tuesday, affect at least 12 restaurants in states including Florida, Texas, and California.

The move comes as the Orlando-based company faces rising operational costs and shifting consumer demand. Bahama Breeze, known for its Caribbean-inspired menu and tropical atmosphere, struggled to regain pre-pandemic foot traffic. Employees at affected locations were notified just days before the shutdowns.

Social media erupted with reactions from disappointed customers and displaced workers. Many lamented the loss of the chain's signature coconut shrimp and jerk chicken pasta. Former employees shared stories of abrupt layoffs, with some claiming they were given no severance.

Darden executives cited "strategic realignment" as the reason for the closures. The company plans to focus resources on its more profitable brands. Analysts note this follows industry-wide trends, with casual dining chains facing particular pressure from inflation and labor shortages.

Local economies near shuttered locations may feel the impact. Each Bahama Breeze typically employed 50-75 workers. The closures leave gaps in shopping centers where the restaurants often served as anchor tenants.

This marks Darden's second major brand reduction in three years, following the 2023 sale of its Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen chain. The company still operates over 1,800 restaurants nationwide under its remaining brands.

Customers holding Bahama Breeze gift cards can redeem them at other Darden properties. The company has not ruled out reopening some locations if market conditions improve.
