Boston College Wins 2026 NCAA Hockey Championship In Overtime Thriller...

Boston College claimed its sixth NCAA hockey championship Thursday night with a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory against defending champion University of Denver. Freshman forward Jamie Armstrong scored the game-winner 8:14 into sudden death before a sold-out crowd at the Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The championship game is trending nationally as hockey fans celebrate one of the most competitive finals in recent memory. Viewership peaked during overtime with 2.1 million concurrent viewers on ESPN2, marking the tournament's highest-rated broadcast since 2019.

Boston College's victory caps a remarkable turnaround under second-year coach Greg Brown. The Eagles finished last season 14-19-3 but went 32-5-1 this year behind Hobey Baker Award finalist Cutter Gauthier, who scored both regulation goals in the final.

Denver's loss ends its bid to become the first back-to-back champion since 2004. The Pioneers had forced overtime with a third-period power-play goal by Massimo Rizzo before falling short in their record 19th Frozen Four appearance.

The championship trophy presentation was briefly delayed when jubilant BC fans threw replica jerseys onto the ice. NCAA officials confirmed they will review security protocols after several items nearly hit players during the celebration.

College hockey's popularity continues growing, with this year's Frozen Four setting attendance records at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center. All three sessions sold out within hours of going on sale last fall, reflecting increased interest in northern markets and ESPN's expanded coverage.

Boston mayor Michelle Wu has announced a public celebration for the team next Tuesday at City Hall Plaza. The Eagles will return to campus Friday afternoon for a rally at Conte Forum, where school officials expect over 5,000 fans.

This marks Boston College's first hockey title since 2012, moving them into sole possession of third place for most NCAA championships behind Michigan (9) and Denver (10). The victory also completes an unprecedented Boston sports year following the Celtics' NBA title and Revolution's MLS Cup win.
